assalamu alaimkum, i have a question that has been on my mind for a while and i think that i’ve been getting mixed answers.\u00a0\u00a0 my question is, is it ok to listed to the Qur\u2019an while being distracted, i.e while falling asleep, cleaning ur house, or doing homework.\u00a0\u00a0 i have been told that it’s not ok to do that so i’ve replced that need with listening to music, but i would prefer to listed to Qur\u2019an, it helps me memorize and helps me sleep better at night.\u00a0 please let me know what you think<\/span><\/p>\n

All praise be to Allah, and may His peace and blessings be on the greatest messenger, Muhammad,<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

You must be attentive to the Qur\u2019anic recitation as much as you can. Allah says,<\/p>\n

“\u0648\u064e\u0625\u0650\u0630\u064e\u0627 \u0642\u064f\u0631\u0650\u0649\u0621\u064e \u0627\u0644\u0652\u0642\u064f\u0631\u0652\u0622\u0646\u064f \u0641\u064e\u0627\u0633\u0652\u062a\u064e\u0645\u0650\u0639\u064f\u0648\u0627\u0652 \u0644\u064e\u0647\u064f \u0648\u064e\u0623\u064e\u0646\u0635\u0650\u062a\u064f\u0648\u0627\u0652 \u0644\u064e\u0639\u064e\u0644\u0651\u064e\u0643\u064f\u0645\u0652 \u062a\u064f\u0631\u0652\u062d\u064e\u0645\u064f\u0648\u0646\u064e”<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/strong>So, when the Qur\u2019an is recited, listen to it, and be silent that you may receive mercy<\/strong>.\u201d (7:204)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Many scholars interpreted this to mean listening to the Qur\u2019an during the prayer for those praying as ma\u2019moom. Some say it is in reference to the Qur\u2019an recited during the Jumuah (Friday sermon), while others maintain that it applies to the Qur\u2019anic recital in general.<\/p>\n

In Tafseer al-Jal\u00e2layn, it says,<\/p>\n

\u201cThis was revealed regarding refraining from speech during the sermon, which here has been expressed by [the recital of] ‘the Qur\u2019an’, because it comprises it; others say that it was revealed regarding the recitation of the Qur\u2019an in general.\u201d<\/p>\n

In Asb\u00e2b an-Nuzool (reasons of revelation) by al-W\u00e2hidi, it says,<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2026 Abu Hurayrah said regarding this verse: \u201cThis was revealed about raising voices while in prayer behind the Messenger of Allah, Allah bless him and give him peace\u201d. Said Qat\u00e2dah: \u201cWhen the prayer was first obligated, people used to speak during their prayers. A man would come and shout to his friend: \u2018How many units of prayers have you performed?\u2019 and his friend would respond: \u2018such-and-such\u2019. And so this verse was revealed\u201d. \u2026 Sa\u2018id ibn Jubayr, Muj\u00e2hid, \u2018At\u00e2\u2019, \u2018Amr ibn Din\u00e2r and other commentators of the Qur\u2019an are of the opinion that this verse was revealed about listening to the prayer leader upon giving the sermon of the Friday prayer.\u201d<\/p>\n

From the above, it seems that there are three opinions regarding what is meant by the verse. Yet, it is fair to say that we should be respectful to the general implication of the text and, thus, we should be as attentive as possible when the Qur\u2019an is recited in general.<\/p>\n

Being busy working or falling asleep while partially listening and benefiting is not an insult to the Qur\u2019an, for you are still benefiting from it. It would be an insult if people are laughing and joking around, and having the Qur\u2019an play in the background while completely distracted from it. Also, if some had the Quran playing in the market or so, you are not obliged to stand there and listen.<\/p>\n

If having Qur\u2019anic recitation in the background will help you with all of what you mentioned, then I would certainly advise you to do so. I would also advise that, if your main language is not Arabic, to get the audio recordings of the translated Qur\u2019an to listen to the Arabic text and the translation to learn the meanings of the Quran as well.<\/p>\n

This is even more warranted if it will spare you listening to music, which is forbidden (according to the majority) for various proofs, including the following hadeeth,<\/p>\n

“\u0644\u064e\u064a\u064e\u0643\u064f\u0648\u0646\u064e\u0646\u0651\u064e \u0645\u0646 \u0623\u064f\u0645\u0651\u064e\u062a\u0650\u064a \u0623\u064e\u0642\u0652\u0648\u064e\u0627\u0645\u064c \u064a\u064e\u0633\u0652\u062a\u064e\u062d\u0650\u0644\u0651\u064f\u0648\u0646\u064e \u0627\u0644\u0652\u062d\u0650\u0631\u064e \u0648\u064e\u0627\u0644\u0652\u062d\u064e\u0631\u0650\u064a\u0631\u064e \u0648\u064e\u0627\u0644\u0652\u062e\u064e\u0645\u0652\u0631\u064e \u0648\u064e\u0627\u0644\u0652\u0645\u064e\u0639\u064e\u0627\u0632\u0650\u0641\u064e…”<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThere will come people of my ummah who will make permissible fornication, silk, wine and musical instruments\u2026\u201d (al-Bukhari)<\/strong><\/p>\n

I ask Allah to make the Qur\u2019an the life of your heart and the light of your chest.<\/p>\n
