Abu Musa reported that the Prophet, (SAAW), heard a man praise another man and he was using exaggeration in his praise of him. The Prophet (SAAW), said, “You have destroyed or broken the man’s back.” I wanted to know if you can explain praise better- Jazak Allaah Khairan.
All praise be to Allah and may His blessings and peace be on His last messenger, Muhammad,
The Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him) praised so many of his companions in their presence.
The hadeeth here above pertains to two conditions:
1- If exaggeration is involved in the praise
2- If the praise, even if true, may cause the one praised to have self conceit
Praise is also disliked when it is done for immediate gains, but would be commendable if it was meant to encourage the one being praised or highlight the goodness of his action for others to follow suit.
Allah knows best.
